WeKnowBristol is a simple, static guide site. We collect very little about you, we don't sell your data to anyone, and we don't run advertising trackers that follow you around the web. We do count visits, but only if you accept the cookie banner, and this page says exactly how. This page explains, in plain English, what that means.
What we collect
- Newsletter: if you sign up for our email, we store your email address for the sole purpose of sending you the newsletter. Nothing else, and never passed to third parties for marketing.
- Server logs: like almost every website, our host (Cloudflare) processes standard technical information such as your IP address and browser type to serve pages and keep the site secure. This is routine and not used to identify you personally.
- Visit counting (only if you accept): when you click Accept on the cookie banner we measure how the site is used with two tools. Google Analytics 4, run by Google, sets its own cookies (named `_ga` and `_ga_` followed by an ID) and records which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from and what device they use. Our own counter sets a random visitor ID cookie (`wk_vid`, kept for a year) and records the page, the sector it belongs to, how far you scrolled, how long you stayed and which outside links you clicked. We use these numbers only to decide which guides to write and fix, and to tell local businesses how many people read a section.
- Before you choose: Google Analytics loads in a mode where it sets no cookies until you accept and only sends Google a basic, cookie-free signal that a page was viewed. Our own counter sends nothing at all until you accept. If you decline, neither sets a cookie.
- Your cookie choice: we keep one cookie (`wk_consent`, for a year) that remembers whether you accepted or declined, so we don't ask on every page. To change your mind, clear this site's cookies in your browser and the banner will ask again.
- Corrections and messages: if you email us, we keep your message so we can reply and fix what you've flagged.
We do not run advertising on the site, sell data, or build a profile of you. Google Analytics data is processed by Google under its own terms; we have not linked it to any advertising account.
Your choices and rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. For the newsletter, every email includes a one-click unsubscribe, and you can leave whenever you like. To make any request, email hello@weknowbristol.com.
Changes to this notice
If we add anything that changes how we handle data (a new tool or a new form), we'll update this page and its date first. Last change, October 2026: this page now describes the visit counting the site was already doing; it should have said so from the start. This is a plain-English summary rather than formal legal advice; if you need the precise legal basis for a specific purpose, ask us.
