What we found
The bus is the value benchmark, and it's not close. At £9.50 for a single, the Flyer is roughly a third of the cheapest car option, and it runs around the clock. For one person with hand luggage, nothing beats it on price.
Pre-booking beats the rank. A fixed private-hire fare from around £35 typically undercuts the £45-plus you'd pay at the airport rank, and you avoid the post-flight queue. The gap widens at unsociable hours.
Watch what VAT and surge did to app pricing. Uber's headline guide price of about £33 looks competitive, but 20% VAT (applied to UK Uber fares since January 2026) and surge at peak push the real total past £40, above a fixed private-hire quote, and you still wait for the car. Always compare the final total, not the base fare.
A fixed pre-book is the predictable option. Our own group, Tick Taxi (disclosed: it publishes this site), publishes fixed airport fares it says run about 30% below the rank, with 20% off online. We price it on the same terms as everyone else; the wider point stands whichever firm you use: booking a fixed fare ahead beats both the airport rank and a surging app.
How we did it
Our method is deliberately dull, because that's what makes it trustworthy:

- Every figure carries its source and the month we checked it.
