You can play a round of golf in Bristol today for £8.50, no membership, no handicap, no booking. That's Ashton Court, run by Bristol City Council, and if you want a full-length course instead, the twilight rates at the private clubs around the city roughly halve the headline green fee.
Neither fact is advertised with any enthusiasm. Members are the business model at the private clubs, so visitor pricing lives in a PDF or a collapsed menu three clicks deep, and the twilight rate, the single best number on the page, is usually at the bottom. We checked every fee in this guide against the operators' own sites in August 2026. Where we couldn't confirm a figure, we say so.
Ashton Court: the answer most people don't know exists

Cross the suspension bridge, walk up through the deer park, and there's a golf course the council will let you on for £8.50 a round (£7 for students, juniors and seniors). No advance booking for golf. You just turn up at the kiosk between 8am and 5.30pm, any day of the week.
It gets better. Club hire is free with a £5 refundable deposit, balls are £1 each and six tees cost 50p, so a complete beginner can play a genuine round for around a tenner all-in. Last equipment hire is 3.30pm, which is the one timing that catches people out.
One correction to the internet's collective memory: older listings describe Ashton Court as two 18-hole par-3 courses, the Plateau and the Lodge. The council currently lists the offer as two courses of nine holes each, one flat and accessible, one hilly and harder, plus footgolf and disc golf at £8.50 a go. If the exact length matters to you, ring 0117 973 8508 before you set off, because the council's own page and the third-party directories disagree.
Is it championship golf? No. It's par-3 golf on a hillside with the best view of any course in the city, and it's how you find out if you like the game before spending £80 finding out you don't. It's on our list of best adult activity days out in Bristol for exactly that reason.
The twilight trick
Here's the angle the clubs don't put on the homepage. Almost every course near Bristol sells the same 18 holes for half price (or better) after mid-afternoon, and in August you've got usable light until close to 8.30pm.
The numbers, from the clubs' own fee pages this month:
- The Players Club's Codrington course is £80 for a weekend visitor round in high season. Turn up for the 6pm evening rate and it's £30. Same course, 62% off.
- Henbury wants £65 midweek and £75 at weekends, but twilight is £30 flat.
- Bristol & Clifton charges £85 weekdays and £95 weekends from April 2026. After 4pm it's £50 and £55.
- Thornbury's main course drops from £43 to £25 after 5pm Monday to Thursday.
An evening tee time in summer is not a compromise. The course is quieter, the light is better, and you'll get 18 holes in comfortably if you tee off by 5.30pm and keep moving. The only real catch is that twilight slots go last on the booking sheet at some clubs, so book online rather than chancing it.

All prices are per adult for 18 holes, checked August 2026 against each operator's site. High season at The Players Club runs roughly April to October, which is now, so ignore the tempting low-season numbers until autumn.
Thornbury is the value pick for a proper round
If Ashton Court is the answer for beginners, Thornbury Golf Centre is the answer for everyone who's played a bit and doesn't want to spend £80. It's a ten-minute drive up the A38 past Filton, with two courses and no pretence about visitors: their site says outright that both are open to non-members seven days a week, bookable online up to a week ahead.
The Severn View course is the sleeper here. It's a full 18 holes of par-3 golf at 2,195 yards, and the online price is £19 midweek, any time. That's an actual 18-hole round, on a maintained course with a clubhouse, for less than two rounds of drinks. The Marlwood is the grown-up course, 6,265 yards of par 71, and at £25 after 5pm on a summer weekday it's the best price-to-course ratio within reach of the city.
Two practical notes from their booking rules: singles and pairs may be paired up with other players, so ring rather than book online if you specifically want to play alone, and the buggy is an extra £30–£35 if you need one.
The posh end, played cheaply
Bristol & Clifton in Failand and Henbury in Westbury-on-Trym are proper members' clubs, the kind with a code of conduct page. Both take unaccompanied visitors, and both are far more affordable than their reputations suggest if you go at the right hour. £50 after 4pm at Bristol & Clifton buys you a championship course that costs £95 at Saturday lunchtime. Henbury's £30 twilight rate is less than half its midweek fee.
The friction at this end isn't money, it's ceremony. Henbury runs on a roll-up basis rather than guaranteed tee times, and you should expect a dress code (collared shirt, no football shorts, trainers a gamble) at both. Bristol & Clifton publishes its dress code on the site; read it, because being turned away at the pro shop after driving to Failand is a miserable way to spend £85.

Bristol Golf Centre at Hambrook runs a 32-bay covered driving range with ball-tracking tech, food delivered to your bay, and a handful of traditional irons-only practice bays for people who just want to hit balls without a leaderboard.
