Notice the order of those two sentences. Every venue website, and most guides, lead with pitch hire, because that's the product they're selling. But pitch hire assumes you can produce ten reliable adults at 8pm on a Wednesday, and anyone who has actually tried to organise weekly football knows that's the part that fails. Bristol has plenty of pitches. What most people are short of is players. When we checked the Bristol listings in August 2026, Horfield Leisure Centre had games on all seven days of the week, priced between £5 and £8 per person, mostly 6v6 and 7v7 with kick-offs from 5.45pm to 8.30pm. City Academy in Redfield had regular evening games at £6–£8, mainly 7v7. Games also run at both Goals sites in Bristol. Popular slots genuinely fill: several Horfield games showed waiting lists or "last spot" when we looked, so book a day or two ahead rather than at 5pm on the day.
The standard is honest mixed-ability football. Organisers tend to balance the teams on the night, and regulars get to know each other, which is quietly the other thing drop-ins are for: after a month of turning up, you're exactly the sort of person existing teams ask to fill in. If you're new to the city, it's one of the fastest routes into a social circle we know of, cheaper than almost anything on our list of best adult activity days out in Bristol.
Goals also runs its own turn-up-and-play format called Kickabout at both Bristol venues, from £5 per player on 5-a-side and £7 on 7-a-side, with no booking required. Leagues: £38 a week between ten of you
If you want football that matters slightly, with a table and a referee, Leisure Leagues runs a Thursday night 6-a-side league at Lockleaze Sports Centre on Bonnington Walk. The published price in August 2026 is £38 per team per week, which Leisure Leagues itself breaks down as £6.33 per player, for 30-minute matches on the 3G pitch. There's a £50 entry fee on the books, though at the time of checking it was waived under a free-entry offer. Two divisions were running, with fixtures between 7pm and 9.30pm.
You enter as a team, but here's the practical bit most people miss: leagues are permanently short of players. Squads of seven or eight lose people to injuries, stag dos and new babies every single week. Turn up at Lockleaze on a Thursday evening, or ask in the bar at Goals, and you will find a captain who needs a body. Playing as a ringer for a few weeks is a completely normal way in.
Goals runs its own leagues at both Bristol sites, with league managers and Goals referees. New teams play a trial match at a reduced cost before being placed in a division. Goals doesn't publish its league pricing online, so we can't print a figure; you'll be quoted when you book the trial.
The Powerleague question
People search for "Powerleague Bristol" expecting a big-box centre like Goals, and the honest answer is that there isn't one. Powerleague's Bristol presence is two partner venues on school and community sites, not a full Powerleague club. Bristol Brunel Academy on Speedwell Road (BS15 1NU) hosts two current leagues, both Monday night 6-a-side at 7.05pm (an open division and a separate Over-35s vets division), and the venue's listed opening hours outside Saturday are mostly "closed". Powerleague's page for Lockleaze Sports Centre showed no current leagues at all when we checked. If a friend tells you to "just book Powerleague", they're thinking of another city. In Bristol, the small-sided market is Goals plus the community venues.
Hiring a pitch, for the group that already exists
Now the bit everyone else leads with. Goals has the city sewn up with two large sites: Bristol South on Broomhill Road in Brislington (BS4 5RG), with 8 five-a-side and 2 eight-a-side pitches, and Bristol North at the Wise Campus in Stoke Gifford (BS34 8LP), with 10 five-a-side pitches and 1 eight-a-side. Both are floodlit, all-weather, and open until 11pm most weeknights.
Live prices on Goals' booking system for a Thursday at Bristol South were £62 an hour for daytime and late slots and £70 an hour for the 7pm and 8pm peak, which the booking page itself splits as £6.20–£7 per player. Goals lets you split the payment between players in its app, which kills the worst job in amateur football: chasing £6.20 off Dave for three weeks. Block-booking the same slot weekly costs nothing upfront and earns loyalty vouchers.
Beyond Goals, Lockleaze Sports Centre hires its 3G for small-sided games, and UWE's Frenchay campus has three five-a-side courts and a seven-a-side court on its floodlit astro. UWE doesn't publish casual hire prices; you have to contact the Centre for Sport, so budget blind or phone ahead. One warning that applies everywhere: 3G surfaces require moulded studs or astro boots, and venues do turn people away for metal blades. Leisure Leagues lists acceptable footwear on its league pages for exactly this reason.
If the maths of a weekly commitment doesn't work for your group, a one-off booking at £62 split ten ways is still one of the cheapest organised things you can do in the city.
