Bristol's two biggest events are both free: the Balloon Fiesta at Ashton Court (7 to 9 August 2026) and the Harbour Festival on the waterfront (17 to 19 July 2026). Add the Light Festival in February and the return of Upfest in May, and there's a strong reason to visit in almost any month. Here's the 2026 calendar, with what's free and what's changed.

The free headliners
Bristol International Balloon Fiesta (7 to 9 August 2026). Europe's largest hot-air balloon event, at Ashton Court Estate about three miles west of the centre, and free to attend. The dawn mass ascents (around 6am) and the evening Nightglow are the highlights. Go early and expect big crowds and traffic.
Bristol Harbour Festival (17 to 19 July 2026). A huge free festival around the Floating Harbour, with boats, live music across several stages and street food, drawing around 250,000 people. One of the best weekends of the year to be in the city.
Bristol Light Festival (19 to 28 February 2026). Ten nights of free light installations through the city centre, 5pm to 9.30pm, brightening the dark end of winter and timed partly with February half-term.
Spring: Upfest returns
Upfest, billed as Europe's largest street-art festival, is back in 2026 after a hiatus, running across Bedminster and Southville over roughly 17 days in the second half of May, with hundreds of artists painting live and free to view. A very Bristol thing to catch, given the city's street-art heritage.
Winter: the Christmas Market
The Bristol Christmas Market runs in Broadmead from 6 November to 23 December 2026, with craft and gift stalls, food and bars, and free entry. A separate outdoor market runs at St Nicholas around the same period.
One that isn't running in full this year
To be straight with you: the St Paul's Carnival, Bristol's celebrated Afrikan-Caribbean carnival, is not taking place in full in 2026. The organisers postponed the full-scale event, including the procession, citing operational and financial risk, and are running smaller community and schools activities instead. It's described as a postponement rather than a permanent end, but don't plan a trip around a full carnival this year.
