Bristol is a hilly city, which is good news for views. Most of the best are free; a couple charge a little for something special.
1. Cabot Tower, Brandon Hill

Central. Free. A 105-step climb up the 1897 tower to a platform 32 metres up, with 360-degree views over the city and harbour, set in Bristol's oldest park. Open roughly 8.15am to dusk. The single best free view in the city.
2. Troopers Hill Nature Reserve

St George, east Bristol. Free, open all hours. A former mining hilltop (with its landmark chimney) above the Avon, with sweeping views out to the Mendips. Quiet and local, away from the tourist trail.
3. Ashton Court Estate

Long Ashton, west. Free, open from 8am. 850 acres of parkland with a 600-year-old deer park and hilltop views back over the city and the Suspension Bridge. Also the home of the Balloon Fiesta each August.
4. Clifton Downs
Clifton. Free. The big open green space beside the Suspension Bridge and Observatory, with the Avon Gorge dropping away on one side. Easy to combine with a walk across the bridge.
5. Clifton Observatory (Camera Obscura)

Clifton. Paid, around £3 to £5. The only working public Camera Obscura in the UK, projecting a live 360-degree view of the gorge onto a screen inside, plus a cave passage down towards the gorge. A novelty right beside the (free) bridge views.
6. SS Great Britain rigging ("Go Aloft!")

Harbourside. Paid, £35 including day admission, age 10-plus, Thursday to Sunday roughly March to October. Climb 25 metres up the rigging of Brunel's ship for a bird's-eye harbour view. The most adventurous option.

If you only do one, make it Cabot Tower: it's free, central and gives you the classic Bristol panorama.
