The Wave is an inland surf lake just off the M5 outside Bristol, where a machine-generated swell lets you surf without going anywhere near the coast. There's no entry fee just to visit, but surf sessions start from £44 for a supervised beginner slot without a lesson, and £50 for a full beginner lesson. Here's what it actually costs and how to plan a visit.
What The Wave actually is
The Wave sits just off Junction 17 of the M5, close to Easter Compton, and uses wave-generating technology to produce consistent, repeatable waves in a large artificial lake, in different zones sized for different abilities. It's aimed at everyone from complete beginners who've never stood on a board to advanced surfers looking for bigger, more powerful waves, and it also functions as a general day-out venue, with a café-bar, shop, children's playpark, skate ramp and lakeside seating that are free to use even if you're not surfing.
Surf lessons and sessions
If you've never surfed before, you'll want a lesson rather than an unsupervised session. Here's how the main options compare:
| Session | Suitable for | Price from |
|---|---|---|
| Little Rippers lesson | Children aged 4–12 | £44 |
| Beginner surf lesson | Age 6+, little or no experience | £50 (£44 child) |
| Beginner surf session (no lesson) | Age 6+, after at least one lesson | £44 (£39 child) |
| Little Improver lesson | Children aged 6–12 | £44 |
| Improver lesson | Confident beginners, age 6+ | £61 (£55 child) |
| Intermediate lesson | Experienced surfers, age 6+ | £61 (£55 child) |
| Advanced coaching | Advanced surfers, age 6+ | from £66 (£61 child) |
Every lesson and session includes a wetsuit, boots and a board, so you don't need to own or hire your own kit separately. Beginner lessons combine time on dry land learning the basics with time in the water in a gentle, white-water zone called The Bay; the unsupervised "beginner surf session" is only for people who've already had at least one lesson there, since there's no coach in the water to help. For 6 to 8 year-olds, an accompanying adult has to be in the water with them, and that adult needs their own paid place on the session.
Practical things to know before you go
Arrive at least 60 minutes before your session is due to start. The car park is roughly a kilometre from the lake itself, and you'll need time to walk in, check in, get changed and go through a safety briefing before you're anywhere near the water. Turning up right at your session time means you'll likely miss it.
Prices are generally higher at weekends, on bank holidays and during school holidays (marked as "Peak"), and lower Monday to Friday outside bank holidays ("Off Peak"), so if your schedule is flexible, a weekday visit will usually be cheaper. In summer, The Wave opens daily from 7am to 10pm, though hours vary the rest of the year, so check the live calendar before you plan a trip.
The site is designed to be accessible, with level paved paths around the lake and pier, lift access to the roof terrace, a limited number of blue badge parking spaces right by the main building, and a Changing Places toilet.
Beyond surfing
You don't have to book a session to visit. There's no entry fee to come and look around, get food from the café-bar, let kids loose on the playpark, or use the skate ramp and games areas, which makes it a reasonable stop even if surfing itself isn't for everyone in your group. If you want to stay longer, there's on-site glamping (The Camp) and a pitch-your-own campsite (The Field) right next to the water.
For other family days out around the city, see our guide to Bristol with kids, and if you're planning a wider itinerary, our day trips from Bristol and general things to do guides cover the rest. If you'd rather stay on the water in the city itself, see paddleboarding on Bristol Harbour.
