Pickleball in Bristol: Where to Play Right Now

Bristol's pickleball venues, drop-in prices from £2 and dedicated courts, and how it differs from the city's padel scene.

Pickleball has arrived in Bristol properly over the last two years, and unlike padel it is mostly played through council leisure centres and volunteer-run clubs rather than dedicated private venues. Drop-in sessions run from around £2 to £11, the newest dedicated club opened at Clifton College's sports ground in 2024, and the best purpose-built courts near Bristol are technically just outside the city, in Keynsham. Here is what is actually bookable.

Pickleball vs padel in Bristol

If you already know padel in Bristol, pickleball is a different sport played with solid paddles and a plastic ball on a much smaller, badminton-sized court, usually without the glass walls padel is known for. Bristol's padel scene runs through six dedicated private clubs with pay-and-play booking apps. Pickleball here runs the opposite way: mostly community sessions at leisure centres and school sports halls, often cheaper, and often needing a bit more digging to find session times.

Bristol Pickleball Club, Chellaram Sports Complex

The most active dedicated club in the city runs out of the Chellaram Sports Complex on Abbots Leigh Road in Clifton, a state-of-the-art sports hall on Clifton College's own sports ground that opened in September 2024. Bristol Pickleball Club runs structured beginner courses, coached group drills and social games led by qualified IPTPA Level 1 coaches, plus occasional festivals and social mixers. Session times change through the year, so contact the club directly before turning up.

Avon Pickleball Club: Thornbury and Jubilee Centre

Avon Pickleball Club is one of the more established groups in the region and runs sessions across two venues a week, both currently members-only, though the club is generally happy to point newcomers in the right direction if you get in touch first.

The Jubilee Centre also runs pre-booked coaching at Bradley Stoke Lifestyle Centre on Friday mornings before players head over for the regular session.

Easton Leisure Centre: bookable and central

For anyone who wants to just book a court without joining a club, Easton Leisure Centre on Thrissell Street, BS5 0SW, is the most straightforward option inside the city. It is run by Everyone Active, courts are bookable through the Everyone Active app, online, or by phone on 0117 955 8840, and there is no membership requirement, just pay-as-you-go once you register for an Everyone Active card. The centre had a £3.8m refurbishment completed in 2025, and Lawrence Hill station is a short walk away, making it one of the easiest venues to reach without a car.

Keynsham Leisure Centre: the best dedicated courts nearby

Just outside Bristol on the Keynsham side, the Better-run leisure centre on Temple Street has 4 indoor wood courts with permanent pickleball lines and portable nets, a proper dedicated setup that is genuinely rare in this area. Courts are bookable for 40 or 60-minute sessions at £11.30, equipment can be hired at reception, and booking goes through the Better UK app or website.

Other venues worth knowing about

A handful of other Bristol sites host pickleball, mostly through school sports halls or informal community groups, and are worth a mention even though times change often enough that you should confirm directly before travelling:

  • Donald Rd, Bristol BS13 7DQ, offers indoor pickleball.
  • Trinity Academy in Lockleaze runs indoor sessions; check pickleballoxon.org.uk or call ahead for current availability.
  • MoD Abbey Wood (South) in Stoke Gifford has indoor courts, bookable by phone.
  • Gordano Sports Centre in Portishead and Bristol Grammar School's gym and sports hall both host pickleball sessions as well, slightly further out but easy add-ons if you are already in those areas.

FAQs

Is pickleball the same as padel? No. Padel is played on a larger, enclosed court with glass walls the ball can bounce off, similar to a mini tennis court. Pickleball is played on a smaller, badminton-sized court with solid paddles and a plastic ball, and Bristol's pickleball scene runs mostly through leisure centres rather than dedicated private clubs.

Where can I just turn up and book a pickleball court in Bristol without joining a club? Easton Leisure Centre is the simplest option. It is run by Everyone Active, courts are bookable via their app, online or by phone, and there is no club membership needed, just a standard Everyone Active card.

What is the cheapest place to play pickleball near Bristol? The Jubilee Centre in Bradley Stoke runs outdoor drop-in sessions for £2 for members and £3 for non-members, making it the cheapest option currently listed.

Is there anywhere in Bristol with proper dedicated pickleball courts, not just taped-over tennis lines? Keynsham Leisure Centre, just outside the city, has 4 indoor wood courts with permanent pickleball lines and portable nets, which is a more purpose-built setup than most Bristol venues currently offer.

Do I need my own paddle to play pickleball in Bristol? Not always. Keynsham Leisure Centre has equipment for hire at reception. For club sessions such as Bristol Pickleball Club or Avon Pickleball Club, contact them directly to check whether loan equipment is available before your first visit.

Can beginners join pickleball sessions in Bristol? Yes. Bristol Pickleball Club at the Chellaram Sports Complex runs structured beginner courses with qualified coaches, and several of the leisure centre drop-in sessions are aimed at mixed-ability social play rather than competitive matches.
