Filton and Stoke Gifford: A Bristol Neighbourhood Guide

What Filton and Stoke Gifford are actually like for movers: jobs, housing, getting into Bristol and what's changing.

Filton and Stoke Gifford sit on Bristol's northern fringe, just inside South Gloucestershire, and they're where most people relocating for an aerospace, defence or university job end up looking. This is an industry and campus area more than a chocolate-box neighbourhood, but it has its own logic, and it's changing fast.

Why people end up here

Filton is one of the UK's biggest aerospace and defence employment hubs. Airbus UK's wing-manufacturing operation, Rolls-Royce's Patchway site (around 3,500 staff working on defence aerospace engines) and GKN Aerospace's advanced aerostructures facility are all based in the Filton Enterprise Area, and MOD Abbey Wood, the Ministry of Defence's procurement centre for its Defence Equipment and Support and Submarine Delivery Agency organisations, is also here. If your job offer mentions any of those names, this is roughly where you'll be working.

Stoke Gifford, immediately to the east, is best known as the postal home of UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus, the university's largest, even though the campus itself straddles the Frenchay and Stoke Gifford boundary. Students and staff heading there will likely be looking at Stoke Gifford, Filton or Bradley Stoke rather than the city centre.

What's actually here

Neither area is a nightlife or restaurant destination, and that's the trade-off for the job access and, generally, easier parking than inner Bristol. Filton has a compact high street (Filton Avenue) with everyday shops, cafes and takeaways, plus the Abbeywood Retail Park. Cribbs Causeway, one of the region's largest shopping centres, is a short bus or drive away in Patchway, with free parking and a large John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and multiplex cinema.

The area's biggest change is Brabazon, the redevelopment of the former Filton Airfield, a 142-hectare site that's being turned into a new neighbourhood with up to 6,500 homes. It takes its name from the Bristol Type 167 Brabazon, a giant piston-engined airliner prototype built at the site in the late 1940s. Within it, a 20,000-capacity indoor arena (announced as the YTL Arena Bristol, more recently referred to as the Aviva Arena) is under construction inside one of the original Brabazon hangars, with groundbreaking in early 2026 and an opening proposed for late 2028, which will eventually put a major live music and events venue on Bristol's doorstep.

Getting around and into the city

This is the one clear advantage of the area for commuters: the MetroBus M1 route runs from Cribbs Causeway through Aztec West, Bradley Stoke and UWE's Frenchay campus into the city centre and on to Hengrove Park in the south, giving a fast, segregated-lane bus link most of the way in. Ordinary First Bus services also connect Filton and Stoke Gifford to the centre, and Filton Abbey Wood station has direct rail services towards Temple Meads and onward to Bath, useful if you're commuting between the two cities. Driving in from here also means dealing with Bristol's Clean Air Zone if your vehicle doesn't meet the emissions standard, so check that before you commit to a daily drive into the centre.

Renting and moving here

Housing here tends to be a mix of 20th-century semis and newer developments around Bradley Stoke and the emerging Brabazon site, generally at lower rents than Clifton, Redland or the city centre, though that gap has been narrowing as Brabazon's new homes come online. If you're relocating for a job at one of the aerospace or defence employers, it's worth weighing the shorter commute against the longer trip into Bristol's restaurants, bars and evening culture, which are genuinely a bus ride away rather than a walk.

If you're weighing this area against student-focused parts of the city, our Bristol universities guide covers UWE's other campuses too. FAQs

Is Filton part of Bristol? Not administratively. Filton and Stoke Gifford both sit within South Gloucestershire, just outside the city of Bristol boundary, though they're generally treated as part of greater Bristol for commuting and amenities.

What's the easiest way to get from Filton into central Bristol? The MetroBus M1 route runs from Cribbs Causeway through Filton and Stoke Gifford into the city centre on a largely segregated bus lane, and there's also a rail service from Filton Abbey Wood station.

Why do so many job adverts mention Filton? It's one of the UK's largest aerospace and defence employment clusters, home to Airbus UK, Rolls-Royce's Patchway site, GKN Aerospace and MOD Abbey Wood.

Is Stoke Gifford the same as UWE's Frenchay campus? Not exactly. UWE's Frenchay campus is postally addressed to Frenchay but actually sits on the boundary with Stoke Gifford, so many students and staff live in Stoke Gifford itself.

What is Brabazon? Brabazon is the redevelopment of the former Filton Airfield into a new neighbourhood of up to 6,500 homes, including a large new indoor arena being built inside a former aircraft hangar, due to open in late 2028.

Is there much to do in Filton and Stoke Gifford in the evenings? Not a lot locally beyond everyday cafes, pubs and Cribbs Causeway's cinema; most people travel into central Bristol for nightlife and restaurants.
