The closest Christmas light trail to Bristol is Luminate at Ashton Court, inside the city itself, running from late November to late December. Wild Lights at Bristol Zoo Project and the trail at Old Down Estate are both a short drive out, and Christmas at Westonbirt is further but one of the best-regarded in the region. All of them need a pre-booked, timed ticket, and popular evenings sell out.
Luminate at Ashton Court
Luminate returns to Ashton Court for its second year, running from Friday 27 November to Monday 28 December 2026, with entry in timed slots between 4.30pm and 8pm. It's a 60-90 minute walking trail through the estate after dark, with interactive light installations and firepits to warm up at afterwards. Because it's inside Ashton Court, on the edge of Bristol itself, it's the easiest of these four to reach without a long drive; see our Ashton Court guide for getting there in daylight hours too.
Wild Lights at Bristol Zoo Project
New for 2026, Wild Lights runs from 27 November to 23 December and turns the zoo's grounds into an after-dark trail, about 30 minutes from central Bristol with easy access off the M5. It's a lights-and-sound trail rather than a normal zoo visit, so the animals are off show; if you want to see them too, you'll need a separate day ticket. Our Bristol Zoo Project guide covers daytime visits and getting there.
Christmas at Westonbirt
Christmas at Westonbirt, the National Arboretum near Tetbury, runs on selected evenings from 27 November to 31 December 2026, created by the producers behind Christmas at Kew. It's further from Bristol than the other three on this list, at roughly 35-40 minutes by car, but it's consistently one of the better-reviewed trails in the wider region, with a different light installation theme each year through the arboretum's trees.
Old Down Estate
Old Down Estate's Festive Illumination Trail runs from 28 November to 28 December 2026, with entry from 4.30pm to 7.15pm and the park open until 8pm. It's one of the quieter options on this list, north of Bristol, and tends to be a good fallback if the bigger trails have sold out for the date you want.
Comparing your options
| Trail | Where | 2026 dates | Entry window | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luminate | Ashton Court, Bristol | 27 Nov - 28 Dec | 4.30pm-8pm, timed slots | Pre-book, sells out |
| Wild Lights | Bristol Zoo Project | 27 Nov - 23 Dec | Evening, timed slots | Pre-book |
| Christmas at Westonbirt | Near Tetbury | 27 Nov - 31 Dec, selected evenings | Varies by date | Pre-book, timed entry |
| Old Down Estate | North of Bristol | 28 Nov - 28 Dec | 4.30pm-7.15pm | Pre-book |
Ticket prices for all four change by date and sell out at different rates, so check each organiser's own booking page for the day you want rather than relying on a figure printed here, since these are exactly the kind of tickets that go up for peak dates like weekends and the run-up to Christmas.
Other festive options in Bristol
If you'd rather stay in the city centre, Bristol's Harbourside and Corn Street are strung with free fairy lights and chandelier-style street lighting that cost nothing to wander through, and pair well with a visit to the Christmas markets or the ice rink. If you're planning a full festive day out with children, our October half term guide and best walks near Bristol guide both have ideas for filling the daylight hours before an evening trail.
Booking tips
Book as early as you can once dates go live, especially for weekend evenings and the final week before Christmas, since all four of these trails run on limited, timed capacity rather than open admission. Wrap up warmer than you think you need to: most of these trails are outdoors on grass or woodland paths, which get cold and sometimes muddy well before the ground frosts over.
