Bristol Harbour Railway: Steam Trains at M Shed

Bristol Harbour Railway runs steam rides between M Shed and the SS Great Britain on selected weekends. Here's when it runs and how to book.

Bristol Harbour Railway runs steam train rides along the quayside between M Shed and the SS Great Britain on selected weekends between July and November. Trips take about 15 minutes, leave from around 11am subject to availability, and tickets are bought on the day at the platform, not booked in advance.

What it actually is

The railway was originally built by the Great Western Railway in the 1870s and later extended, running for a century as a working goods line serving Bristol's docks before it was handed over to the city's museums and turned into a heritage railway. Today it's run by volunteers from M Shed, using two Bristol-built steam locomotives, Henbury and Portbury, that once worked the docks railway at Avonmouth. The carriages are the same type of wagon once seen hauling goods around the old City Docks, giving the whole ride a genuinely local, working-history feel rather than a generic tourist train.

The rides sit alongside M Shed's other working exhibits, which include crane visits and, at certain times of year, hands-on steam engine and crane driving experiences and boat trips. All of these run on their own separate schedules, so check the M Shed what's on page for the full list if you want to build a day around more than just the train.

When it runs

The railway doesn't run every weekend, so check the current schedule on the M Shed website before you plan a special trip around it. In a typical season it operates on selected Saturdays and Sundays roughly from mid-July through to early November, alongside separate crane rides and steam engine driving experiences at other points in the year. Because it's run by volunteers using working historic machinery, dates can be altered or cancelled at short notice for crew shortages, mechanical issues or bad weather, so it's worth calling M Shed on 0117 352 6600 to check if you're travelling any distance specifically for it.

Getting there

The railway runs along Bristol's Floating Harbour between M Shed and the SS Great Britain, both an easy walk from the city centre and the harbourside. If you're coming by car, see our Bristol parking guide and our Bristol city centre parking advice, since there's no dedicated parking at M Shed itself. The Bristol Ferry also stops nearby if you'd rather arrive by water; see our Bristol harbourside guide for the wider layout of the area.

What else to combine it with

A ride on the Harbour Railway pairs naturally with a visit to M Shed itself, which is free to enter and covers the city's industrial and social history, or with the SS Great Britain at the other end of the line, which does charge for entry. If you're bringing kids, it's a good low-cost add-on to a harbourside day out alongside the free city farms and other options in our Bristol with kids guide. It's also a genuinely different way to see the harbourside itself, since you get a track-level view of the quayside and the ships moored along it that you don't get walking the same stretch on foot.

Tips for visiting

Arrive in good time if you want a specific ride, since trips run subject to availability and can sell out or fill up on a nice weekend. Bring cash or a card for the ticket office at the M Shed platform, and check the weather forecast, since heavy rain or extreme heat have both caused the railway to stand down in the past for the safety of volunteers and passengers.
